The Guardian reported a combined purse of around $30 million for the fight, working out at roughly $15 million each. That is the origin of the $15 million figure now circulating widely. The same report was explicit that the official purses were undisclosed.

Why we are not stating $15 million as fact. No commission record, contract, fighter statement or promoter release confirming that figure for this fight could be located. More awkwardly, ESPN has separately reported a one-fight Zuffa Boxing deal for Benn also worth around $15 million — connected to a bout with Regis Prograis rather than to Garcia. The same number attached to two different fights is exactly the circumstance in which a figure gets repeated until it hardens into fact.

It may well be right. We simply cannot show that it is, and a purse figure is the kind of claim that gets quoted back for years.

Boxing News Online, citing CompuBox, reported that Benn landed eight power punches across the fight — all in the first round, none in the second — though we could not access an official statistical release to confirm it.
